Foster Care Program

New Foster Care Manual

Foster Parent Application

Petfinder.org

A program for compassionate people who want to open their hearts and homes to homeless animals in need.

Foster program questions and answers:

What is the Foster program?

The Foster Program is a group of volunteers committed to providing animals a second chance at life by providing shelter, food, love and care. Animals that are orphaned, injured, or even healthy, adoptable animals in need of training may need foster care while awaiting adoption.

It takes a very special person to become a Foster Parent. Whether it's a litter of two-week old kittens, or an abused Labrador who has become terrified of people, many animals arrive at Haven Humane Society who have potential, but who may not be ready for adoption. These special animals need love, care, and a learning environment that only a Foster Parent can provide.

What is the goal of the Foster Program?

The goal is to rehabilitate as many cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, and small companion animals as we can reasonably handle.

Are there any expenses for a Foster Parent?

Yes, but they are minimal. You provide the home, the attention, love, care, and transportation to and from adoption sites. If you need assistance with food for your foster pet we will provide that as well.

What if my Foster Pet needs medical care?

Don't worry, we provide all the medical care for the animals. All you have to do is contact your Foster Care Coordinator, and an appointment will be made at one of our participating veterinarians. First and foremost, contact the foster care department.

How long will I foster an animal?

Fostering may last from a few days to 3 months. You are asked to foster each animal until it is placed in a loving, permanent home.

What if I want to adopt my foster animal?

That's easy, you will only be asked to pay for the cost of the spay/neuter and the adoption fee will be waived.

How does the Foster Program help the community in other ways?

Besides our Shelter Animal Foster Program, we also offer the following three programs to our community:

Women's Refuge - Foster parents provide temporary care to pets who have, along with the victim, fled an abusive situation. These foster care arrangements are carefully made, completely confidential, and are only for a specified length of time.

Disaster Response - Foster Parents play a vital role in helping with disaster response. When there are floods and fires, animals need a place to go. You can give them the refuge they need until their family gets back on their feet.

Senior Citizen Emergency - Many times the elderly have a pet at home, but no family in town to care for it in the event of an emergency. The hospitals need someone to call....this is where we come in.

You may choose which program you are interested in, or participate in every aspect of fostering. It is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do!
